In Paris during a harsh winter, four poor artists sharing a small apartment go through the struggle of making ends meet and avoiding eviction, while navigating their own love stories. Marcello, the painter, is passionately in love with Musetta, but her flirty Parisian nature drives Marcello to constant jealousy. Rodolfo, the writer, meets Mimi, a neighbor from the same building, when she knocks on their door looking for a candle. They fall in love, but soon it becomes evident that Mimi is seriously ill.
