Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida Spring Ballet Gala

Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida’s 24/25 season culminates in a breathtaking Spring Gala, blending the enchanting worlds of ballet and opera. This exquisite program opens with “Harlequinade," a lively one-act ballet originally choreographed by Marius Petipa to the music of Riccardo Drigo, then we present excerpts from Vladimir Issaev’s "La Favorita" from Donizetti’s beloved opera as this ballet seamlessly integrates into the operatic narrative. We will also showcase "Markitanka" (La Vivandière), choreographed by Saint Leon to the delightful music of Cesare Pugni, and the highlight of the evening is the exquisite pas de deux from "La Traviata," set to Giuseppe Verdi’s iconic score. Join us for an operatic journey through dance, where the worlds of ballet and opera intertwine to create an unforgettable evening. Our Spring Gala promises to captivate and enchant, celebrating the enduring power and beauty of these timeless art forms

Alfonso Losa & Patricia Guerrero: Alter Ego Presented by Adrienne Arsht Center

Virtuoso performers Patricia Guerrero and Alfonso Losa throw away the rule book to explore personal connection. Guerrero draws geometric figures with her dance. She dismantles her movements and re-creates them. Losa develops new schemes without breaking the mold, builds without deconstructing and stays true to his roots. Alter Ego is flamenco stripped bare. It is pure passion, visceral movement and unfettered exploration.

Eva Yerbabuena: Yerbagüena (oscuro brillante) Presented by Adrienne Arsht Center

Born in Frankfurt and raised in Ogíjares, a small town in Granada, Eva Yerbabuena is considered “a visionary and masterful dancer” (The Guardian) who is “touched by greatness” (The Times) and embodies “the type of once-in-a-generation artist” (The Independent). Her work draws on the teachings of artists such as Enrique “El Canastero,” Angustillas “La Mona,” Mariquilla, Mario Maya and Juan García, who taught her choreography and movement in Cuba. In 2001, Yerbabuena was invited by Pina Bausch to dance in Wuppertal, Germany with Mikhail Baryshnikov, Marie-Claude Pietragalla and Ana Laguna. In 1998, at only 28 years old, Yerbabuena created her own company. Since then, she has choreographed a dozen shows and been recognized around the world.

Pioneer Winter Collective: Apollo Presented by Miami Light Project and FUNDarte

A powerful intergenerational reckoning with the wisdom and innocence, strength and fragility, physical and spiritual beauty we contain as individuals and as a community. Apollo new is a dance-theater work exploring intergenerational queer dynamics, memory, HIV/AIDS, and legacy. This biomythography uses dance-theater to delve into the intersection of personal history, cultural memory, and mythology. Inspiration stems from the ancient Greek myths of Apollo (god of music, prophecy, healing); Balanchine’s 1928 Apollo ballet; the god-like power of a DJ in a nightclub; and queer representations (healthy and otherwise) of strength and beauty. Whereas Balanchine’s ballet staged a visit between a youthful Apollo and three ageless Muses, our dance-theater work unites a younger queer dancer with three queer elders: each of them former, different iterations of Apollo. They meet, compete, and confront the tension of generations fighting to understand each other, and be understood themselves.
