MOAD Artist Residency Featuring Loni Johnson Presented by Museum of Art and Design (MOAD) at MDC

MOAD Projects is pleased to host artist Loni Johnson for an artist residency at Miami Dade College's Homestead Campus. The artist will use the campus's gallery as a space in which to create new work, and will host open studio hours on Thursdays, October 17 and 24 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Loni Johnson is a multi-disciplinary visual artist born and raised in Miami, FL. As an artist, educator, mother, and activist, Johnson's work is rooted in family history and spiritual traditions. For Johnson, there is a cyclical obligation to give back and nurture our communities with her creative gift and it must be utilized to better our world. Through movement and ritual, the artist explores how ancestral and historical memory informs how, when and where we enter and claim spaces. Johnson graduated in 2003 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from SUNY at Purchase College School of Art and Design. MOAD's programs are made possible with the support of the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council, the Miami-Dade County Mayor, and Board of County Commissioners. They are sponsored in part by the State of Florida through the Division of Arts and Culture and the National Endowment for the Arts, and with generous support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. The Miami Herald is a media sponsor of MOAD's programming. Photo by World Red Eye, courtesy of Locust Projects.

"Saudade" Exhibition by Master of Fine Arts candidate Mariana Espindola Presented by University of Miami Art Gallery

The University of Miami presents Saudade, an exhibition by Master of Fine Arts candidate Mariana Espindola. Saudade presents a documentation of my experience with death, grief, the loss of my father, and the changing dynamics of my family. This journey began a few years ago when I found out my dad was sick, continuing through the event of his passing last February, and now in the experience of life without him. Saudade is a series of large-scale photographs, along with three narrative photobooks, and a circular photo-based sculpture depicting landscapes, people, and fabric. This journey incorporates the three main stages of the grief I have experienced, including anxiety, presence, and silence. By showcasing this work in the exhibition Saudade I hope to create an opportunity for people to understand the realities of the grieving process as well as a space where viewers may feel comfortable discussing their own sentiments. ABOUT THE ARTIST Mariana Espindola, a photographer based in Miami, Fl, captures profound moments within her family, exploring the emotional landscape surrounding loss. Through her lens, she intimately documents the journey of her loved ones during times of grief, creating a visual narrative that transcends personal boundaries. Additionally, Espindola embarks on a unique exploration of her surroundings, meticulously photographing the moments encountered on her quest to complete 300,000 steps. Her work intertwines the personal and the physical, inviting viewers to contemplate the interconnectedness of familial bonds and the rhythms of everyday life. Saudade is on view until June 28, 2024, at the University of Miami Gallery in the Wynwood Building, 2750 NW 3rd Avenue, Suite 4, Miami, FL 33127. Gallery hours are Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. or by appointment. *Hours may be subject to change; please call (305) 284-3161 to confirm times.
