North Beach Social - Gabel Presented by The Rhythm Foundation

The May edition of North Beach Social, and we are celebrating Haitian Heritage Month, in association with SummerStage NYC. Join us for limited in-person audience (with Covid-19 safety protocols) or via Live-Stream. Gabel, one of the most popular konpa groups today, in concert, with an opening set by Nancy St Leger Dance Company. Gabel is a Haitian konpa band formed by a group of four music-loving friends in 2007. The name Gabel translates as “I dare you…,” and this dare has led to great success as the group has become one of the most popular konpa groups today! Gabel has been awarded countless awards and accolades within the Haitian Music Industry and has toured the US, Canada, Haitian the French Caribbean and Paris many times. Recently during the Covid-19 quarantine, they set aside time for philanthropic work. They provided free virtual concerts, accompanied by medical professionals to share health information within the Haitian-American community. They are working now on new music and video, and look forward to performing before live audiences. Nancy St Leger Dance Ensemble is a Little Haiti-based Haitian folkloric 6-member dance company was founded by Nancy St Leger, a dancer and educator. Her favorite dances are what she called ‘warrior dances’ - ibo, petro and nago. She teaches purely Haitian folkloric dance styles at the Little Haiti Cultural Complex (currently on hold for Covid-19). The Ensemble dancers are students and parents who give freely of their time to be part of a vision to promote Haitian dance with pride. Some recent celebrity sightings for the group have included their part in Rihanna and DJ Khaled’s video “Wild Thoughts”, appearing on Black Ink Crew Miami, on stage with Arcade Fire during their last visit to Miami, and with Harmonik at CompasFest. The group’s signature costumes are hand-sewn by mama Nyrva St Leger.

LALA Performance Series: CIRCA/MIA & Such Rooted Things Presented by Miami Dade College's Live Arts Miami

Ever wonder what Miami will be like in the year 2050? What if we asked our children? CIRCA/MIA is a one-of-a-kind multi-media performance and film exploring visions of Miami’s future based on drawings, interviews, and dialogue with 35+ children across Miami-Dade County, and performed by six of the children’s mothers. The performance and film are accompanied by the eclectic sounds of Miami’s own, Afrobeta, who will also perform live. Explore how the hopes and dreams of a child can inform our notions of the past, present, and future of our coastal city on the brink of climate crisis. This year’s LALA cohort includes Miami-based artists Michelle Grant-Murray,Dale Andree, Sandra Portal-Andreu, Fereshteh Toosi, Susan Caraballo, and Hattie Mae Williams. COVID-19 Considerations and Precautions: This show will be presented live to a limited audience with COVID-19 protocols in place. All guests must register in advance, and be ready to present their E-ticket on their mobile device at the door, for a contactless experience. All are required to adhere to social distancing guidelines (6 ft.) and wear the appropriate facial coverings correctly throughout the event, except when eating or drinking. We appreciate your understanding as we work to ensure the health and safety of all guests and staff in attendance. Parental supervision required for children at the event.

Miami-Dade County Auditorium and Dranoff International 2 Piano Foundation present “Cuba Symphonic” featuring virtuoso pianists Orlay and Orlando Alonso, The Alonso Brothers, in an immersive experience that places the audience at the center of the “Golden Era” of Cuban music and entertainment. This show features Jose Luis on the guitar, Adolfo Herrera on percussion, Magela Herrera on the flute, and bailaora Irene la "Chiqui de Málaga." Tracing Legacies Presented by Kaleidoscope MusArt

Kaleidoscope MusArt is thrilled to present violinist and composer Gregory Walker and pianist Redi Llupa in “Tracing Legacies” - a chamber music program that will explore cultural and familial legacies through sonatas for violin and piano by Johannes Brahms, George Walker, and his son Gregory Walker. The program will be presented online, via the Demio platform on Saturday, May 22 at 5:00 p.m. EST. The concert will conclude with a Q&A session with the artists. Registration is free but required. Time Fragments Presented by Kaleidoscope MusArt

Kaleidoscope MusArt is thrilled to present Duo Chromatica (Mia Detwiler, violin; Ted Powell, piano) in Time Fragments - an online concert of music for violin and piano featuring the world premiere of “Picking up where I left off” by Jeffrey Niederhoffer alongside works by Ermir Bejo, John Cage, David Martynuik, Jeffrey Mumford, and Kaija Saariaho. Founded in 2017, Duo Chromatica has been a strong advocate for 20th and 21st century music, having collaborated with the International Contemporary Ensemble and performed at numerous festivals, including the 40th anniversary of the Foro Internacional de Música Nueva - the largest contemporary music festival in the Americas. Featuring works written within the last 8 decades, the Time Fragments program explores a broad spectrum of contemporaneous yet wildly varied musical aesthetic. The concert will conclude with a live Q&A session with the performers and composers. Registration for the event is free. Donations of any amount are welcomed and greatly appreciated. Nu Deco NXT program - Spring Break Intensive

Nu Deco NXT is a youth ensemble for 7th-12th grade students that applies the Nu Deco model of combining the traditional orchestral instruments (Strings, Winds, Brass, Percussion) with a full rhythm section (guitars, drums, keys) and performing works by living composers, rearranging works by innovative artists, and exploring improvisation and musical creation.

Nu Deco is currently accepting musicians in 7th – 12th grade to participate in the Nu Deco NXT Spring Break Intensive (March 28 – April 3) taking place at the Adrienne Arsht Center.
