Detroit Symphony Orchestra Presented by Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County

Jader Bignamini, music director Alisa Weilerstein, cello ABELS Emerge ELGAR Cello Concerto RIMSKY-KORSAKOV Scheherazade Don't miss this “new generation's cello superstar” (Agence France-Presse) when Alisa Weilerstein plays Elgar’s Cello Concerto with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. One of the best-loved pieces in the cello repertory, Elgar’s emotional masterpiece has been a favorite of performers and audiences since its premiere just over 100 years ago, and is now a pop culture hit featured on the soundtrack of Cate Blanchett’s award-winning film Tár. Hailed for her consummate artistry, emotional investment and rare interpretive depth, “Weilerstein is truly a phenomenon,” the U.K’s Telegraph says. The program, conducted by Detroit’s music director, Jader Bignamini, opens with Emerge by Michael Abels, a Pulitzer Prize winner best known for the opera Omar and his genre-defying movie scores for Jordan Peele’s Get Out, Us and Nope. Abels notes that his new 10-minute Emerge “begins with the sound of an orchestra tuning up during a sunrise; a metaphor for how we feel being able to play music together again after so many months of that being restricted.” Concluding the concert is Rimsky-Korsakov’s sensuous and alluring Scheherazade. Inspired by the fantastic folktales of The Arabian Nights that feature “Aladdin and His Magic Lamp,” “Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves” and “Sinbad the Sailor,” the brilliantly orchestrated Scheherazade is the very definition of an unforgettable crowd-pleaser and the perfect showcase for the outstanding virtuosity of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra players.
